Backing up Synology with Hyper Backup to Swiss Backup (Swift)

This guide details how to back up a Synology NAS using the Hyper Backup application via the OpenStack Swift protocol on Swiss Backup, the backup solution in an independent Swiss cloud.

Prerequisites

• Have an Infomaniak Swiss Backup space with an available device quota (minimum 1) for a Cloud backup.
• Add 1 device of type Cloud to get OpenStack Swift settings.

Configure Hyper Backup for Synology NAS

To configure a new backup:

1. Log in to the administration interface of your Synology NAS (DSM).
2. If necessary, install the Hyper Backup application from the Package Center

3. Open the Hyper Backup application.
4. Click on the + to add a new Cloud provider.
5. Choose OpenStack Swift from the list of providers:
   
6. Enter the fields according to the information specific to your device (read this guide - click here) and modify the drop-down menus if necessary as shown below:
   
   
7. Choose the volumes and applications to back up:
   
   
8. Set the backup frequency and check the box to enable encryption (keep the encryption key safe to be able to use your backup when needed):
   
9. Backup rotation prevents overloading your backup location by limiting the maximum number of backups to keep:

Restore / View Backups

To restore / view your backups:

• You can use any Swift client compatible with Keystone V3, e.g., Cyberduck.
• If your backups are in .hbk format (Synology proprietary format)
  • and you no longer have a NAS, download the .hbk file and use their Hyper Backup Explorer software.
